Mystery mooring buoy available for sale

Jan 17, 2024

In the market for a 54-inch mooring buoy? The Southold Highway Department has one for sale.

The hollow, steel mooring buoy, which looks remarkably similar to a wrecking ball, is usually attached to the anchor of large ships or barges for use in deep water.

It is unclear how the mooring buoy ended up in the town's hands, according to Highway Superintendent Vincent Orlando.

"I have no idea," he said. "It is anybody's guess."

One theory is the buoy washed up on shore and highway crews were asked to remove it and place it in one of the department's storage facilities, Mr. Orlando said.

Regardless of how it got there, the town now wants it gone. The asking price is $500.

The mooring is still in "good" working condition, Mr. Orlando said.
